3 Key Steps to Motivation for Health -Dr. Bryan Schuetz

Have you ever had a problem with finding inspiration to exercise? Change your diet? How about just getting off the couch? I thought so… Everyone experiences lack of get-up-and-go at some point. I would like to provide you with some tips I recommend to my patients who are starting new healthy regimens of diet and exercise.

1. Learn to walk before you run! -Many people make the mistake of trying to change too much too fast. They get out January 1st and begin a new workout program and or diet.

They tend to go “Full Bore” and overdo it. With the workout this leads to pain and stiffness and even possible injury. With the dieters they too feel pain of being hungry and having to break out of their routine. In either case the result is that they quit whatever program they have started, even if they have the best intentions.

So the number one recommendation is to begin a motivation for health program that will make little changes over time. Install new habits into your daily routine that will stay the course…-nothing too crazy. Maybe begin with a walking and stretching program before you commit to a gym, and maybe make small changes in your diet like changing from soda to water, and eating 5 servings of vegetables per day.

2. Bring a buddy! –Try to have a friend or spouse join in with your program. Make the changes together and you have an immediate support person and motivation for health program in place. This way you can be a “personal trainer” to each other. Even if you eventually take your workout to a gym you can split the cost of a real personal trainer if you are on the same plan.

3. Be aware of small changes and use them for motivation. Clothes fit better? Lost 5 pounds? Share how good you feel with others and it will boost your level of motivation for even more changes! One thing we all love is to share our accomplishments with others. If you have a buddy be sure to talk daily to support each other!

Dr. Bryan has authored a new book that covers all aspects of health, exercise and weight loss. It is entitled "The Ten Commandments for Natural Weight Loss.

I go to the internet often to find motivation for all aspects of life. This is one of my favorite pre-workout videos to watch!
